Layer 2: Exposure and Focus (The Data Layer)

This is the layer most beginners obsess over, and it's usually fine. Check the histogram for clipped highlights or crushed shadows, confirm the focus point landed on the actual subject (not the background, not the foreground), and check shutter speed against movement in the frame. If this layer is broken, the fix is mechanical: change a setting, reshoot.

Layer 4: Subject and Story (The Application Layer)

Everything below this layer can be flawless and the photo can still fail here, because this is the layer that actually matters to a viewer. Ask what the photo is trying to say, and whether every element in the frame supports that message or fights it. A stray bright object in the corner, an unrelated person walking into frame, or simply an unremarkable subject all fail at this layer regardless of how clean the technical execution was underneath.

Isolating the Fault

Go bottom-up, exactly like a network trace. If the light is wrong, nothing above it will fix the photo, reshoot in different light. If the light is fine but exposure is off, fix settings and reshoot the same scene. If exposure is fine but composition is weak, you often don't need to reshoot at all, recrop, or move your feet next time and reframe. If everything technical is fine and it's still boring, the fault is in the subject or the idea, and no editing will fix that; you need a different photo entirely.
